The City Hall of São Paulo has initiated a public consultation to establish traffic rules for electric bicycles and self-propelled vehicles in the city. The objective is to define speed limits, identify streets and avenues where these vehicles can circulate, and establish rules for the use of sidewalks. So far, over 200 suggestions have been presented, addressing themes such as the maximum allowed speed in bike paths, the possibility of circulating on sidewalks, and the need for specific rules for self-propelled vehicles, which include skateboards, small scooters, and more powerful bicycles. The maximum speed established by the National Traffic Council (Contran) is 32 km/h, but many drivers exceed this limit, generating tension and risks on the roads.
In the institutional context, the Executive Secretariat of Mobility and Traffic (Semtra) presented an ordinance that proposes a speed limit of 20 km/h for self-propelled vehicles on bike paths, bike lanes, or bike routes, in addition to banning the circulation of these vehicles on sidewalks. For bicycles and electric bicycles, the proposal allows circulation on sidewalks and pedestrian-only roads, as long as the speed is less than 6 km/h. Additionally, self-propelled vehicles can only circulate on roads with a speed limit of up to 40 km/h, while common bicycles and electric bicycles can ride on roads with a speed limit of up to 50 km/h, as long as they are traveling in the same direction as other vehicles. These rules aim to increase the safety of pedestrians and vehicle drivers, as highlighted by Councilwoman Renata Falzoni, who proposed similar regulations.
The establishment of clear rules for the circulation of electric bicycles and self-propelled vehicles is essential to ensure safe and harmonious coexistence among the different modes of transportation in the city. Safety on the roads is a critical aspect, and the implementation of speed limits and specific rules can help prevent accidents. Furthermore, defining areas where these vehicles can circulate can help organize traffic and reduce confusion among drivers and pedestrians. The public consultation is an opportunity for the population to contribute with suggestions and help shape the city’s traffic policies.
The public consultation will remain open until the next day 8, and the population can contribute with suggestions and comments on the proposed ordinance. It is a chance for citizens to express their concerns and ideas on how to improve urban mobility and road safety. With the implementation of effective rules, the city can become a safer and more pleasant place for everyone, regardless of the chosen mode of transportation. The participation of the community is essential to ensure that traffic policies meet the needs and expectations of the population.
