This Sunday, May 31st, the lower lanes of viaducts 10 and 11 of Eixão Norte were opened to vehicle traffic at 6pm, after the closure of Eixão do Lazer. With this, pedestrian crossing will be done over viaduct 10, which is closer to bus stops and walkways in the region. The release was made by Companhia Urbanizadora da Nova Capital do Brasil (Novacap), responsible for the work. Viaduct 10 connects Eixão Norte to Buraco do Tatu, near Rodoviária do Plano Piloto.
Work Details
The reform work on viaducts 10 and 11 of Eixo Rodoviário (DF-002) started in June 2024, with an initial budget of R$ 13.5 million. However, the reform went through three addendums and reached around R$ 25 million, with an increase of almost 80% of the value, according to an assessment by the Tribunal de Contas do Distrito Federal (TCDF). The work was expected since August 2025, the initially stipulated deadline for delivery. Governor Celina Leão had declared, on the last Friday (5/29), that the work should be fully delivered next week.
Viaducts 10 and 11 were built approximately 70 years ago, with work starting around 1958 and completed near the beginning of the city of Brasília, in 1960. In this period of almost seven decades, these special works did not receive preventive maintenance. According to experts, reinforced concrete structures resist without maintenance for up to around 50 years, when far from the coast. Therefore, the urgent need for work in the area is evident. The case has been monitored by TCDF since 2025, when the Court’s plenary determined the inspection after questioning delays and increased contract value.
The release of the lower lanes of viaducts 10 and 11 will improve traffic flow on Eixão Norte. Eixão do Lazer is a program that promotes temporary occupation of public roads for leisure and cultural activities. Novacap is responsible for various infrastructure works in the Federal District. TCDF is the control body responsible for monitoring the management of public resources in the Federal District. The work reflects the effort to improve infrastructure and road safety in the region.
