Horan described the grieving experience as surreal, stating that it still seems unbelievable that one day, as if it were a snap, Payne was gone. He shared that sometimes he goes to places and thinks about some silly thing that happened in a hotel or about something random that makes him laugh. We always had a lot of fun in Australia because we could go out and go to the beach. Liam wasn’t so bad at surfing. I can barely swim. These statements show that Horan is still processing the loss of his former bandmate and friend.
Liam Payne died after suffering injuries from falling from the balcony of the hotel room where he was staying. The singer was 31 years old. After his death, each member of One Direction published a tribute on social media, and the band’s official Instagram account also shared a joint post – the first in four years. Niall Horan also addressed grief in his new single, “End of an Era“, which was initially written with the intention of looking back at the past with nostalgia, but ended up being resumed with a new perspective after Payne’s death.
The track “End of an Era” was written by Horan alongside songwriters John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, collaborators on the last three One Direction albums. For the three, it was a pretty wild experience to have to write a song like that, especially since John and Julian lived next to Liam for a long time, and the three grew up together.
