A Conmebol Imposes Penalties to Palmeiras’ Coach and Cruzeiro
The Conmebol recently announced penalties to Palmeiras’ coach, Abel Ferreira, and Cruzeiro, due to incidents that occurred in competitions organized by the entity. Abel Ferreira was fined $15,000, equivalent to over R$ 75,000, for showing the middle finger to Flaco López in a game against Sporting Cristal. This attitude was considered offensive and violating the principles of conduct of Conmebol, specifically clauses b and c of article 11.2 of the Disciplinary Code. Cruzeiro was punished with a fine of $100,000, about R$ 500,000, due to an episode of prejudice that occurred in one of its matches. In addition, the mineiro club was forced to promote respect actions, such as displaying posters and messages on social media, during its next match in Conmebol competitions.
These penalties reinforce the importance of promoting respect and proper behavior in sports competitions. Conmebol aims to ensure that the games are carried out in a safe and inclusive environment for all participants, including players, coaches, and fans. The application of fines and the obligation to promote respect actions are important measures to maintain the integrity and morality of sports. In addition, these actions can serve as an example for other competitions and sports federations, encouraging the adoption of similar practices to promote sports in an ethical and responsible way.
For example, Cruzeiro’s punishment includes displaying a poster with the phrase “El Respeto Es Titular” in Spanish, which highlights the importance of respect as a fundamental value in sports. This initiative may contribute to creating a more positive and constructive environment around sports competitions, fostering cooperation and solidarity among participants. Over time, these measures may help reduce incidents of prejudice and promote a culture of inclusion and respect in sports.
The application of penalties and the promotion of respect in sports may also have a positive impact on education and training of fans and young athletes. By seeing clubs and players being punished for inappropriate behavior, fans may better understand the importance of respect and discipline in sports competitions. This may help create a more positive and constructive culture around sports, where values of respect, cooperation, and solidarity are always prioritized.
