The Flamengo confirmed that midfielder Jorginho suffered a fracture in his right foot during the match against Palmeiras on Saturday, in the Brazilian Championship. The injury was diagnosed after an imaging exam was performed on Monday morning and is the result of two violent fouls suffered by the player in the first half of the match, in which the opposing player was not warned with a yellow card. With this, Jorginho is out of the match against Cusco, valid for the CONMEBOL Libertadores, on Tuesday, and may also be absent from the match against Coritiba, next Saturday, in the Brazilian Championship.
The injury to Jorginho is the sixth fracture of a Flamengo player in less than six months of the season. The red-black club emphasized that in none of the plays that originated such injuries, the opposing athlete was expelled, and in some cases, not even the yellow card was applied. On the other hand, Flamengo is the team with the most playing time in the country, only the 12th team in number of fouls committed, but it is the club with the most players expelled in the Brazilian Championship so far: six, with five of them with a direct red card. Injuries and expulsions have been a recurring problem for Flamengo this season.
Jorginho suffered two fouls still in the first half of the match against Palmeiras, but managed to continue on the field until the 41st minute of the final stage, when he left for the entry of Saúl. Flamengo reported that the number 21 is out of the duel against Cusco, for the Libertadores, and if he still does not have the conditions to play, he will be absent from the match against Coritiba, on the weekend, being the 10th absence of the squad for the duel. The club now needs to deal with Jorginho’s absence and find a solution to minimize the impact of injuries and expulsions on the team’s performance.
With Jorginho’s injury, Flamengo will need to seek alternatives to supply the absence of the midfielder in the next matches. The team will take to the field on Tuesday to face Cusco, for the Libertadores, and next Saturday to face Coritiba, for the Brazilian Championship. The scenario may become even more challenging if Jorginho is not fit to play in the match against Coritiba, which would increase the list of absences of Flamengo for the confrontation.
