The Chamber of Deputies has passed a Proposal for an Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that determines the end of the 6×1 scale, which established a period of work of 6 consecutive days followed by 1 day of rest. The PEC was passed with 472 votes in favor and 22 against in the first round, and 461 votes in favor and 19 against in the second round. The Federal District’s bench voted unanimously in favor of the PEC. With this approval, the 44-hour weekly work schedule will be reduced to 42 hours, starting 60 days after promulgation, and in 14 months, the workload will be reduced to 40 hours per week. In addition, the schedule will pass to five days of work and two days of rest, with one of them preferably on Sundays.

This PEC was approved after a long discussion and debate in the Chamber of Deputies, with the government’s bench led by Paulo Pimenta (PT-RS) presenting an aggregative amendment proposal that was almost identical to the report of federal deputy Léo Prates (Repuplicans-BA). The National Congress presented an amendment to suppress the transition and was defeated, while the party filed a preference amendment to restore the original proposal of Deputy Erika Hilton (PSol-RJ), which provided for a 36-hour weekly schedule on a 4×3 scale. The opposition tries to expand the processing on the Chamber and Senate, asking for a special commission or including an amendment that allows calculating the salary according to the workload.

The implementation of the PEC will have important practical consequences for workers, such as the reduction of working hours and the change in the work schedule. Important note that the PEC follows the analysis of the Senate and, eventually, the Presidency of the Republic, which will have the last word in the promulgation of the amendment. The president of the Chamber, Davi Alcolumbre, has avoided making public statements about the proposal, but allies guarantee that he will not stall the processing.

The process of processing the PEC in the Senate and Presidency may be long and complex, with discussions and debates among the different parties and political leaders. In addition, the implementation of the PEC may have important legal and economic implications for companies and workers. It is essential that all parties involved follow the process and prepare for the practical consequences of the PEC.
